Interview with an Alan Rickman impersonator
The following is a translation of an interview with Alan Rickman, which was printed in today’s edition of the newspaper Express, which is sold in the Cologne area. It’s a rag, and while I think that the interview is really funny, it seems quite out of character for AR if you take into account other interviews he gave.

Perfume? Not for me!

Phew, the man can be really villainous – of course, on the screen only. Whoever meets Alan Rickman (60), gets to know an obliging, humorous man. Someone who regards fame as an annoying side effect. (Almost) every filmgoer knows him – either as the terrorist in the first Die Hard film or as Severus Snape in Harry Potter. Now Rickman refines the film adaptation of Perfume.

Which perfume do you prefer to use?

None. Perfumes are not my thing.

But surely you give perfume away as a present?

In the past. To my girlfriend. But I’ve realised that as a man you shouldn’t buy perfumes for a woman. The fragrance changes. What smelled great in the shop, didn’t smell as good on her. Now I only buy what I’m told to buy.

Why don’t you like perfumes?

I do on women. I just don’t like it on my skin. (theatrically inhales his own smell)

Which is the most infatuating fragrance you have ever smelled?

I won’t give you the answer you want to hear. (laughs) The most beautiful smell has to be that of a baby that has been just washed. This pure fragrance of the skin.

The main topic of Perfume is the perfect sense of smell. Which talent would you like to have?

Playing the piano. My mother knew how to play. I thought it was wonderful. She had to give it up sometime, though. She was a single mother and had to make sure that we all got something to eat.

Why don’t you learn to play the piano yourself?

I’m sure there will be a time when we all receive a chip implant. By hitting the button we all can play the piano then.

…and until then?

I don’t have the time. The only thing that remains for me to do is enjoying it. In the flat above ours there lives a concert pianist. When she’s practising, we sit on the balcony with a glass of red wine and listen. It’s fantastic.

Fantastic – a good cue. In Perfume there is a scene with an orgy…

It was magnificent. I had never thought that I would ever in my life walk among a crowd of 850 naked bodies, which are making love.

Wasn’t there a great danger that the scene would become pornographic?

I’m very proud that the scene didn’t turn out to be sexist at all, although everyone lies on top of each other, grinding.

Do you think Perfume will be a success?

I’m absolutely sure.

You play Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films. Has this successful role changed your life?

Each role slightly changes an actor. The big change in my life was that I made a film at all. I played the villain in the first Die Hard film and suddenly I had a film career. I entered the premiere as a normal member of the audience and left as a star, for whom the way through the masses had to be cleared.

***

The article also mentions that another film premiere will be held in Cologne tomorrow at 7 p.m. No details on the stars, though.

Vera, Thanks so much for that translation! I heard there was going to be an interview in the EXPRESS. However, a question: "Who is this man & what have you done with our Alan?" Is the interview legitimate? It just doesn't sound like him at all, or am I totally off-base here?

I don't know who he is either. That's why I said it had to be an impersonator. ;)

I'm not familiar with the newspaper because it's a local newspaper for Cologne, and I live somewhere else. The international newsstand at the train station carries it, though, so that I got hold of a copy. It's obviously not a quality paper and resembles the British Sun. I don't know any American equivalents. Nevertheless I'm convinced that the interview took place. It's another question in how far it has been cut.

I don't know. I actually can picture him saying some of these things.

Question, about the orgy you translated, didn’t turn out to be sexist at all,

Are you sure of the word 'sexist', which I interpret to mean something like 'derogatory towards one sex'? Just curious, as that gives that sentence an odd meaning.

Well, he obviously did. And it's nice that he always can surprise us - or me in this case.

Yes, I stumbled over the word as well, but the only way to translate the word used in the German text is 'sexist'. Probably the person who translated it into German already made a mistake.

After a few glasses of wine, you mean? Who knows. The article doesn't say when and where the interview took place. Munich most probably - or over the phone.

OK...another thought just occurred to me. In Europe, do they call mens' scents "perfume" or "cologne"? In US, it's never called perfume when referring to a man, only to a woman. If it's the same in Europe, I'm surprised that he, as well, said "perfume", unless it was just because of the movie title.

Oh dear, what a difficult question. I can't speak for Europe, and I'm not even sure I can speak for Germany. I literally translated the expressions 'perfume' and 'fragrance'. Although perhaps I should have used 'scent' instead of 'fragrance'. Obviously I don't know which words AR really used when he was interviewed in English. I only know the German translation.

Apart from the French expressions 'eau de parfum' and 'eau de toilette' that are used on the bottles (with an added 'pour homme' for men), I think people call perfumes either 'Parfum' or 'Damenduft' and 'Herrenduft', which translate as something like 'ladies' scent' and 'men's scent'.

I'm really no expert, but I think the word 'cologne' is rare. You can read 'eau de cologne' on some bottles, but I don't think that people really use it.

Here in the US, I would think the opposite...... that cologne is much more widely used than perfume (being the much more concentrated and expensive version).

Here 'eau de toilette' is the cheaper version of an 'eau de parfum'.

I know that 'eau de colognes' can be very expensive as well (if they are by Lagerfeld etc), but I've never understood that. After all, the original eau de cologne isn't a perfume, but a 'refreshment'. You don't dab it on your pulse points but just hold the bottle under your nose or soak an edge of your handkerchief. It's meant to help when you're close to fainting. Here you can still buy real eau de cologne in bottles. The infamous 4711, which every German will know.

Could this be just an ackward translation of the interview? Or was it written in English?

I could see him saying the part about the smell of a baby's skin. That seems a lot like something he'd say.

I don't believe I've ever read a fan sighting when they're reported any smell of fragrance at all on the man. So that could be true too.

I guess I'm not sure why everyone thinks it's a weird interview? Am I missing something painfully obvious?

No, it was in German, and I translated it. What AR originally said in English is anyone's guess.

Yes, I've heard other people comment on the smell of babies as well. It seems to be a popular smell.

There seem to be many fans who are dying to know what he smells like. If the interview is reliable, they now have their answer.

Personally, I wondered a bit about the interview because it seems to be quite open. In my opinion, he didn't give away any intimate details, but because he's always so careful, I now was astonished to read about him giving RH a perfume, or listening to the piano playing of the person living above him.

Ahh...I understand. But, I personally didn't think he was that "open". He was just "informal". The only personal info he revealed was that he buys his girlfriend the kind of perfume she tells him to (typical man), he doesn't wear cologne (something already suspected), he likes red wine (old news), and likes to sit out and listen to piano music (not surprising for a cultured man). The only new info to me was that his mother played piano and he wished he could.

In other words, IMHO, it was a typical Alan interview -- we think we got more than we really did. The man is gooooooood, isn't he?

I'm sorry, hon! *hug* I was TERRIBLY rude! I truly am happy for each bit of new information we get from the man. I just wish he wasn't quite so smooooooth in his interviews. It makes me feel a bit manipulated.

Remember how passionate he got when MNiRC was cancelled? He really spoke from his heart - he got all pissy and indignant and spit out the word 'censorship' like a bullet aimed at the heart! It was fabulous -- a glimpse of him being "real". I know he has a reputation...and is in the public eye...and must be careful...and choose his words so they can't be twisted... I certainly don't blame him a bit for being so guarded in interviews. It just bums me out sometimes.

Again -- I TRULY am sorry for being rude! I didn't intend for it to come out that way!

I have the same feeling - it doesn't seem like real thing. o.0 Alan himself told once that he is used to fake interviews with him [or something similiar like that - I know he told that he read an interview that he never done]

Well, there are a few magazines and newspapers in Germany that have a rather bad reputation for disregarding the truth, but they usually don't make up entire articles. It's more a matter of blowing up certain details out of proportion.

I still think it's for real, just a bit unusaul. Perhaps AR was in an exceptionally good mood.

Thank you so much for translating this for us, Vera! Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

I'll agree that he is more open than he usually is in many interviews....but I can still hear him saying these words in my head. In other words, I don't find it so out of character. I'm willing to bet that he had a glass or two of wine or something a little stronger to loosen up this tongue.

On another website...which I'm not sure still exists (the one that opened with the quote, "If Velvet had a voice...") there were a number of stage door reports from people who went to see Private Lives in New York. One of the recurring remarks from different people was "how wonderful he smells" when they got close to him to ask for an autograph or a picture. Since he is claiming here that he doesn't use perfume (or cologne...which we call it here in the states when referring to a man's fragrance) he must have used some sweet smelling soap to wash off all that stage makeup!

Can't you just picture him and Rima sitting on their balcony, sipping wine and listening to the concert pianist upstairs?

Thanks again, Vera!

-Vicki

Yes, I know which website you mean. Well, the interviewer was talking about perfumes / colognes. I guess AR could still use a wonderful aftershave. I think many men do so although they'd never use any perfume.

It sounds great, doesn't it? Very relaxing. Unfortunalely my stupid piano-playing neighbour is really bad and only knows how to play children's song or etudes.

ROTFL....OK...who has the nerve (at the next stage door or premiere, whatever) to ask him what cologne he wears? I know I wouldn't!!
Vera, we do have similar publications in the US but they're not regarded with the same esteem as the more legitimate ones. There have been instances when such magazines/newspapers have simply printed absolute untruths about celebrities and have been sued for alot of money for defamation of character and slander. Many times the celebrity won in court.

Well, apparently he doesn't wear any. But I wouldn't ask him either.

I think the newspapers / magazines are quite the same here. There are several that have a rather low reputation. But the freedom of the press is extremely highly valued so that for a long time celebrities often lost in court. I think it has changed a bit in favour of the celibrities due to some quite recent verdict by the European court.
