I'm sure the film stands alone, although I think that some of Grenouille's motivations might be difficult to understand. It's probably like the HP films. When you don't know the books, you miss a few things when you watch the film because you can't fill in the missing details.
I plan to watch it in English as well. Maybe it's better? ;)
