This is the drawing that I did for Snupin Santa this year as a gift for snapealina. Since everything has now been revealed, I decided to post it here as well as at the Snupin Santa Site. There were lots of wonderful stories and art posted this year. If the pairing interests you, you should definitely check it out. :)

You have, from time to time, asked me to let you know about any mistakes in your writing. Thus, while you did not, in fact, ask me to proofread your log notes, I feel compelled to inform you that "[Client's sister #1], [client's sister #2], and [boss] had a three-way" is not an appropriate way to document a conference call.
Cheers, firefly
P.S. The look on your face when I brought this to your attention--and explained--was priceless. I wish I'd had a camera. |

Her listing of Potterverse words and their capitalisations and proper spellings was one of the first resources my first beta, larilee, directed me to use, and I have directed all my beta-babies to it, as well. Fare thee well, mrs_muggle, and thank you for the invaluable contribution to fandom! |

- wistfuljane: A Rant In Non-Linear Form - I think for many people who scoffs at fans for being angry at translators and publishers for not keeping cultural conventions such as names and honorifics, they do not understand the personal issue rooted here.//It's an issue of cultural appropriation, yes.//But for me, it's more a matter of losing an identity and being redefined. -
neo_prodigy: [in noscans_daily] Your Recommendations: LGBT Edition - What excellent comic book series/graphic novel featuring LGBTs would you recommend? Which series and/or storytellers are doing it right? -
- twistedchick: a question re warnings in AO3 - If a character death is onscreen, the question is obvious. If it's not? If the rape scene is merely alluded to and discussed, not shown in graphic and upsetting detail, does it deserve a warning? -
- happydork: Comment to hit count ratio on stories - I've been thinking recently about hit counts on a story vs the number of the comments the story gets. -
rheasilvia: Story titles and I: A dysfunctional love story. - I myself am chronically title-impaired. It's exceedingly rare for me to know what a story will be called — almost always, when I finish a story, I am completely clueless as to what it should be called. I currently have two big writing projects, over half a dozen small ones, and no titles whatsoever. How about you? What are your favorite titles — not just of your own stories, but in general? How and where do you find titles? Do they come easily to you, or do you seek them out actively in some way? -
- phoebe_zeitgeist: Some reasons why I didn't link a post to metafandom, by me, Phoebe - As a compiler, and more specifically as a compiler who from time to time uses her discretion to not link something that's been submitted, I thought it might be useful to try to explain a little of what I'm looking for when I evaluate something for metafandom. What follows, I want to emphasize, is in no way an official statement -- I'm not speaking here for [community profile] metafandom as a whole, nor for any of the other individual compilers. It's just my own approach, although of course that approach is informed by the comm's rules and goals. -
clarelondon: MAKING SHIT UP - I think all the self-justification should stop. In fact, I think it never should have started. Screw it. If people don't like the shit we make up, they can read shit other people make up or else read nonfiction. The only way to deal with the nay-sayers is to ignore them. God knows reviewers keep us busy reaching for the ego salve. Why acknowledge gender bashers? -
sparkindarkness: It's only fiction! - I repeat again that, no, I don't think straight people should stop writing with GBLT fiction. They should write it - just as I think white people should write about POC. I will never ever say that people should only write about people like them. But there is a huge world of difference between writing the other well (or trying to) and using, appropriating and stereotyping the other. -
kill_claudio: 1952 called. They want their clichés back. - there's still a bit of a battle in my mind between the authorial instincts that worry about making the characters consistent with their backgrounds and personalities, and the feminist instincts that don't want to let these attitudes go unchallenged. -
rockeandroll: RPF and keeping boundaries - So there has been some discussion about this compartmentalising thing, and how you keep your distance, and from the writing point of view, what counts as 'canon', and when 'researching canon for your fic' just becomes being nosy and overinquisitive about someone's private life. -
puella_nerdii: porn/meta is my OTP, or: why there are so many queer people in my head - On the other hand, a lot of these fics place sexuality at the center of the story in a way that makes me a little uncomfortable, because even if the story ultimately decides that it's okay to be gay (or if the characters conclude that they love each other and that gender doesn't matter -- or invoke some version of the "we're not gay, we just love each other" clause), it others queerness within the context of the story in a way that often feels a little like a slap in the face to me. -
furiosity: the freeway's heading south - I think it's important to remind ourselves every once in a while that our experience of fandom does not in fact equal that of every other fan out there, and just because we feel our corner of fandom is the bestest doesn't mean it's cool to disregard fen from other corners, especially not if we belittle them for not being fannish in the same way as we are. -

Title: Paper Cranes Author: kirakaze Pairings: Frasier/Niles, with eventual Niles/Roz and Niles/Sam Malone. Mentions of most canon pairs. Genre: Romance, ANGST, drama, smut Rating: M for sexual situations and angst overload Warnings: Incest (obviously), too much sexing, ANGST ANGST ANGST, suicidal!Niles, depressing themes, a few choice words peppered here and there, bad writing, a few chapters of a violent kidnapping plot....tell me if I missed anything. XD Spoilers: Follows canon up until "The Last Time I Saw Maris" and splits off into an AU. Includes a few canon events later on.
Disclaimer: I own nothing but my own words. If I owned the show and the characters, do you really think I'd be writing fanfiction? :P

As the brothers struggle to come to terms with their unorthodox attraction to each other, they find themselves caught in a dangerous web of scandal and peril where not only their careers, but their lives, are at risk. This headline has me wondering. Does it make a difference if a mouse is demented? If so, who would care? Oh, I know it's all to help humans, but really, the headline sucks. How about Clues to healing dementia found, or perhaps, Cellphone Radiation might be beneficial. There was another very badly written headline, the other week - "Iran Executes Escaped Prisoners", It was only when I read the story, that I found out the escapees- poor sods, had been re-captured. |

| body in swimming pool |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|03:18 pm] |
Setting: Phoenix, Arizona circa mid-September 1984
Premise: Character A (late twenties, average height and build) is killed, and her body is left in a swimming pool in an outdoor courtyard.
Search Terms: I'll be honest -- I was kind of scared to Google anything about dead bodies because there would be some nightmare-inducing Image Search results. I did read up on buoyancy of the human body and several of the Wikipedia articles ending in "mortis," so I have some basic knowledge of the science involved. I also read the previous posts to this community regarding decomp.
Behind the cut, questions about how corpses behave in water. ( Cut for squick. )
Thank you in advance for your help. |

| Wales, unstable person with a gun |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|05:09 am] |
Where: Cardiff, Wales When: 2040ish Fandom: Torchwood
A woman is transported by the rift (a tear in time in the Cardiff area) to approximately the year 2040. There, they are rapidly discovered by the local as someone who is:
1) Behaving oddly, disoriented and confused, possibly lost, possibly under the influence or mentally unstable, but not trying to hurt anyone; 2) Not Linked (connected to the future internet/cellphone 24/7 via wireless broadband), which is usually either a punishment for certain crimes or a choice by religious fanatics - and she doesn't look like some sort of fundamentalist; 3) Armed with a handgun, with a concealed holster; 4) Not identifiable in any local (UK or EU) databases - no government record of her at all; no passport, drivers license, etc. anywhere they have immediate access to. They don't have her name yet, but assume very sophisticated computerized visual matching capacity, so there is no photo that matches her anywhere within hundreds of miles.
Granted that this is several decades in the future, I have to start somewhere - what would the Welsh police do NOW if they showed up in a similar situation? Would she be arrested, and for what? How big a problem would the gun (and lack of permit, if they are required) be for her? |

| Half-Blood Prince longlisted for 7 BAFTA awards (icluding one for Alan Rickman) |

Have some free time to myself for the moment, away from online schoolwork, and this is something worth crying over for...
Retrieved from http://www.snitchseeker.com/harry-potter-news/half-blood-prince-longlisted-7-bafta-awards-70549/
Half-Blood Prince has been longlisted for nomination consideration for 7 BAFTA awards in the categories of; Make-Up & Hair, Special Visual Effects, Sound, Costume Design, Production Design, Cinematography and Supporting Actor (Alan Rickman as Severus Snape).
Nominations will be announced January 21st, when the finalists will be narrowed down from fifteen to five. The awards ceremony will take place at the Royal Opera House in London, England on February 21st.
Notes and Comments: Finally, Make-Up, Hair, Costume Design, and Cinematography are recognized (unlike the Academys). First of the Potter films to be so in a looooong while. Still no nomination for Tom Felton and still no Oscar for Alan Rickman, but this is still good news. No, not good, GREAT! :) Hope some of these considerations make it to the shortlist and hopefully will be in the final nominees...We'll see ;)
Also just to note, there are many other films considered for nomination worth looking at in the link provided (longlisted), including Inglourious Basterds, Invictus, The Lovely Bones, Precious, and Avatar, to name a few.
Come on, no one can resist this heart-broken face...

| Because Snape didn't have enough birthdays in canon... |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|12:54 pm] |
Okay, you guys? Saturday, January 9th, is Severus Snape's b'day, and while there are a number of events taking place online (not least amongst which is the Severus Big Bang, which'll be starting soon), I really want to draw your attention to the Party I'm participating in, i.e., severus_shorts.
This Snape's birthday celebration has two parts. The one I've already prepared for is the Brief Fics Showcase, where already-written anonymous fics will be posted every day for a month. And then there's the 24 hour drawble and ficlet celebration. In the words of the mod:
You are cordially invited to participate in Severus' Shorts' Brief Birthday Celebration! For the 24-hour period of 9 January 2010 (Eastern Time), please help us celebrate Severus Snape's 50th birthday by drawbling and drabbling upon the theme of one, some, or all of Severus' birthdays. No sign-ups or prompt-claiming is required (although prompts have been provided for your inspiration here. Official prompt-claiming is closed, but you may still use any of the prompts, even the claimed ones, so long as you give credit to the prompter in your drawble and drabble/ficlet headers).
To participate in the BBC, post your birthday-themed drawbles and drabbles/ficlets in your journals (as many works as you'd like to contribute), and then link to them in reply to the Brief Birthday Celebration post (note: which will show up on Snape's birthday). At the end of the BBC, a master list of celebrants' gifts to the Snape fandom will be posted in severus_shorts — and then the Brief Fics Showcase will begin!
A full description of both the BBC and BFS may be found in our community profile, and questions about severus_shorts may be directed to severus.shorts [at] gmail [dot] com. A quick birthday-themed sketch or drabble that you can post on Snape's birthday and then a month of fic to read. Come play!

1. The semester started Tuesday. I am already exhausted, despite the fact that my schedule is actually more livable this semester. (9 AM Monday classes are the work of Satan, I tell you!) Then again, it is already inherently more difficult to motivate oneself at this time of year, when we're smack in the middle of the academic year, at the coldest, darkest time or year, still nursing holiday hangovers, and having to gird ourselves for the punishing cold every time we set a toe outside. We will soon be in the swing of things, but at the moment things are wonky, and not only for me.
2. I am so. freaking. excited. about the upcoming Snape Big Bang and Severus Shorts fests. They're going to be spectacular. I didn't write for either (it seemed unfair to commit when my muse was still being difficult and I couldn't absolutely promise that it would deliver), but I've had the great privilege of seeing and reading and beta-reading a few of these pieces ahead of time, and... well. My only comment is: SQUEEEEEEEEE! You will find much to enjoy, because our fellow fans have been wildly creative. I can't wait to sort through all the Snapely goodness!
3. I will not, however, be doing much sorting through the Snapely goodness on Snape's actual birthday, however, because Severus happens to share his birthday with my mother, and we're celebrating with her on Saturday. She has indicated a taste for Middle Eastern and/or North African, so we're taking her to Palm Palace. I've never been to this location, only the one near The University, but I think she'll enjoy herself. I'm getting a baklava tray for afterward, in lieu of a cake; excellent baklava is not at all difficult to find in this area, and it will be a nice change of pace. (And if you've never had a chance to sample the variety of baklava-related treats that exists, you have no idea what you're missing.)
( And there will be presents )
4. Snow later today. I won't have to drive in it, so... yay? I know and appreciate that many of you have suffered unusual amounts of snow this year, but we've had hardly any this winter, and that's downright strange for Michigan. I am surprised to discover that I miss it. Without the snow, the world is ugly and brown and dead, and the whole thing is depressing. As a lifelong Northerner, I may be hardwired to cherish the occasional snowstorm. Besides, we haven't had any reason for people to panic and run out to buy milk and bread thus far, and the local merchants are surely suffering without that economic stimulus. ;-)
5. morethansirius and dacian_goddess are both fabulous, clever, incredibly talented women. They know why I'm saying that. *g* ~smooches you both~
Happy Thursdays to all! |
