You have, from time to time, asked me to let you know about any mistakes in your writing. Thus, while you did not, in fact, ask me to proofread your log notes, I feel compelled to inform you that "[Client's sister #1], [client's sister #2], and [boss] had a three-way" is not an appropriate way to document a conference call.

Cheers,
firefly

P.S. The look on your face when I brought this to your attention--and explained--was priceless. I wish I'd had a camera.

[Current Music |Dear Disaster - Once and Future]

I just noticed tonight that [info]mrs_muggle has purged her journal. But she left us [info]potterwords. Her listing of Potterverse words and their capitalisations and proper spellings was one of the first resources my first beta, [info]larilee, directed me to use, and I have directed all my beta-babies to it, as well. Fare thee well, [info]mrs_muggle, and thank you for the invaluable contribution to fandom!

Why, for the love of God, is my neighbor noisily snow-blowing his driveway at 1 AM, when the blizzard hasn't even ended yet and... did I mention the 1 AM part? People are sleeping*, FFS!

*Not me, as evidenced by the fact that I am, in fact, posting on Livejournal at 1 AM, but I assume that the normal people in the neighborhood would appreciate some shuteye.

Cellphone radiation helps demented mice: study

This headline has me wondering. Does it make a difference if a mouse is demented? If so, who would care? Oh, I know it's all to help humans, but really, the headline sucks. How about Clues to healing dementia found, or perhaps, Cellphone Radiation might be beneficial. There was another very badly written headline, the other week - "Iran Executes Escaped Prisoners", It was only when I read the story, that I found out the escapees- poor sods, had been re-captured.

Which I am in, and with a splendid little ficcie all about... ooh it's a secret. But you'll like it if you can spot it. You really will.

And I thought, as part of the Birthday celebrations, I could finish off all the promptses I've taken over the last year which went by the wayside.

Because Snape didn't have enough birthdays in canon... [Jan. 7th, 2010|12:54 pm]

bethbethbeth
Okay, you guys? Saturday, January 9th, is Severus Snape's b'day, and while there are a number of events taking place online (not least amongst which is the Severus Big Bang, which'll be starting soon), I really want to draw your attention to the Party I'm participating in, i.e., [info]severus_shorts.

This Snape's birthday celebration has two parts. The one I've already prepared for is the Brief Fics Showcase, where already-written anonymous fics will be posted every day for a month. And then there's the 24 hour drawble and ficlet celebration. In the words of the mod:
You are cordially invited to participate in Severus' Shorts' Brief Birthday Celebration! For the 24-hour period of 9 January 2010 (Eastern Time), please help us celebrate Severus Snape's 50th birthday by drawbling and drabbling upon the theme of one, some, or all of Severus' birthdays. No sign-ups or prompt-claiming is required (although prompts have been provided for your inspiration here. Official prompt-claiming is closed, but you may still use any of the prompts, even the claimed ones, so long as you give credit to the prompter in your drawble and drabble/ficlet headers).

To participate in the BBC, post your birthday-themed drawbles and drabbles/ficlets in your journals (as many works as you'd like to contribute), and then link to them in reply to the Brief Birthday Celebration post (note: which will show up on Snape's birthday). At the end of the BBC, a master list of celebrants' gifts to the Snape fandom will be posted in [info]severus_shorts — and then the Brief Fics Showcase will begin!

A full description of both the BBC and BFS may be found in our community profile, and questions about [info]severus_shorts may be directed to severus.shorts [at] gmail [dot] com.

A quick birthday-themed sketch or drabble that you can post on Snape's birthday and then a month of fic to read. Come play!

[Current Music |Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John]

1. The semester started Tuesday. I am already exhausted, despite the fact that my schedule is actually more livable this semester. (9 AM Monday classes are the work of Satan, I tell you!) Then again, it is already inherently more difficult to motivate oneself at this time of year, when we're smack in the middle of the academic year, at the coldest, darkest time or year, still nursing holiday hangovers, and having to gird ourselves for the punishing cold every time we set a toe outside. We will soon be in the swing of things, but at the moment things are wonky, and not only for me.

2. I am so. freaking. excited. about the upcoming Snape Big Bang and Severus Shorts fests. They're going to be spectacular. I didn't write for either (it seemed unfair to commit when my muse was still being difficult and I couldn't absolutely promise that it would deliver), but I've had the great privilege of seeing and reading and beta-reading a few of these pieces ahead of time, and... well. My only comment is: SQUEEEEEEEEE! You will find much to enjoy, because our fellow fans have been wildly creative. I can't wait to sort through all the Snapely goodness!

3. I will not, however, be doing much sorting through the Snapely goodness on Snape's actual birthday, however, because Severus happens to share his birthday with my mother, and we're celebrating with her on Saturday. She has indicated a taste for Middle Eastern and/or North African, so we're taking her to Palm Palace. I've never been to this location, only the one near The University, but I think she'll enjoy herself. I'm getting a baklava tray for afterward, in lieu of a cake; excellent baklava is not at all difficult to find in this area, and it will be a nice change of pace. (And if you've never had a chance to sample the variety of baklava-related treats that exists, you have no idea what you're missing.)

And there will be presents )

4. Snow later today. I won't have to drive in it, so... yay? I know and appreciate that many of you have suffered unusual amounts of snow this year, but we've had hardly any this winter, and that's downright strange for Michigan. I am surprised to discover that I miss it. Without the snow, the world is ugly and brown and dead, and the whole thing is depressing. As a lifelong Northerner, I may be hardwired to cherish the occasional snowstorm. Besides, we haven't had any reason for people to panic and run out to buy milk and bread thus far, and the local merchants are surely suffering without that economic stimulus. ;-)

5. [info]morethansirius and [info]dacian_goddess are both fabulous, clever, incredibly talented women. They know why I'm saying that. *g* ~smooches you both~

Happy Thursdays to all!

Slept in. Somehow missed alarm, woke up at 9:30. First thought, get dressed, call patients, get on the road. Coffee later. Call first person- same one from yesterday. One I was told it was URGENT that they be started on IV. NOT HOME. Call second one. NOT HOME. FINE reassess the situation. Now sitting reading flist, sipping hot chocolate.  My other visits are now later, as there are only three visits after talking with all of the rest. One in hospital, one discharged as home from hospital now and all sorted. I have paperwork to do and then will pop out and see these peeps.

Okay, setting out for home. It's 24 degrees, wind chill makes it 18 - balmy for you mid-western types! But it iced overnight and there are accidents everywhere.

Cover me - I'm going in.

;)

See ya on the flip side, where my weekend begins!

I look like a freaking poodle. Note to self: there's a reason your gut reaction to the stylist's suggestion of long layers was "Hell, no!" Listen to that next time. Also, there was no need to take off almost three inches. Very disconcerting to have it this short and puffy, especially in the dead of winter.

It's not all just the same thing with different words [Jan. 7th, 2010|07:03 am]

[Current Mood | contemplative]

I'll preface this by saying that I know next to nothing about the Tiger Woods scandal. I'm kind of good with that. Recent and anomalous fannish obsession aside, for the most part I really don't care about celebrity news and tend to know even the barest details about things like the fact there even is a Tiger Woods scandal a) under protest and b) only because of media saturation. So I'm not even sure how the Buddhism versus Christianity discussion really fits into the whole thing other than somebody on Fox News using the scandal as a reason to try to argue Christianity is better.

What does interest me is the discussion that it has spurred from Barbara O'Brien that showed up on my IJ flist this morning, in which she points out that Fox News' Brit Hume has one point correct: Buddhism doesn't offer a path to redemption for the simple reason that it doesn't have a concept of sin. The concepts just don't fit. This is a nice change from what I often see in interfaith conversations, which tends to boil down to, "We're all doing the same thing just with different words." That annoys me for a number of reasons when I see it. Words matter. And differences in belief matter, otherwise there wouldn't be multiple religions. At the very least, there is a profound difference in believing there is only one true God while others are false, believing in multiple non-omnipotent non-omniscient Gods, and believing in no Gods at all. That last is the reason I'd never make a good Buddhist, after all. I'm just not wired for non-theistic religion.

Now, not having a concept of sin or redemption in the Christian sense doesn't mean Buddhism has nothing to say about how to live a good and moral life. O'Brien did a pretty decent job trying to explain that over on About.com. Somehow, though, it seems that some have decided that article boils down to saying the Fox News commentator was right. Erm, that's a rather radical interpretation of the text. O'Brien's response to that tries once again to explain that the whole conversation is becoming a comparison of apples and oranges. One of my favorite bits in it is this: "But Christians -- westerners generally, in fact -- carry around in their heads a conceptual framework of what religion is supposed to be that doesn't apply to Buddhism. (This is one reason so many people argue that Buddhism is not a religion; I say it is, and the framework is flawed.)  So to say that Christianity is superior to Buddhism because it offers redemption and Buddhism doesn't is a bit like saying birds are superior to horses because they have feathers and horses don't. It's nonsensical."

Refreshing. I'd like to see more of that in public interfaith discussion, the recognition that different religions are, in fact, different, preferably followed with a commitment to get along with one another regardless of faith or lack thereof.
