| Alan Rickman's influence on "Perfume" (spoilers) |
[Apr. 27th, 2007|09:07 pm] |
Rickman said "Perfume" was the most expensive film to come out of Germany, and that it took Tykwer and crew a week to shoot the crowd scene near the end. In it, Grenouille stands on a platform, about to be executed. A frenzied crowd falls under his spell as he waves a handkerchief on which he has dripped the perfume he made from the scent of his victims. The people take off their clothes and begin to make love.
"If I had any influence on that scene it was telling Tom, 'For God's sake, get a group of dancers at the center of it,'" Rickman related. "With just extras, there wouldn't have been a core." The 50 to 60 dancers hired created a spiral of energy that moved outward, Rickman said.
"It was a very moving experience to watch them do that scene, hour after hour, day after day," he continued. "It actually became about courage. Those people were actually very brave and very open. I dread to think what that scene would be like with 2,000 English extras."
Now, I want to know in how far Alan Rickman really influenced the orgy scene in Perfume, because I thought that it was really bad and had nothing in common with the scene in the novel.

In addition to the interview with Alan Rickman that was published in the Express two weeks ago, there's another interview in this weekend's edition of the Hamburger Abendblatt. I assume there was one press conference in Munich or Berlin, which several jornalists attended, but this journalist managed to write a more sensible interview.

I went to see Perfume again - this time in English. As it turned out, it was exactly the same film. ;) This time I managed not to compare it to the novel all the time - probably because I didn't recognise any of the narrator's parts or the dialogues -, but I still think that, while it is beautiful to look at, it doesn't really convey Grenouille's inner life.
I did enjoy listening to Alan Rickman's voice, though.
I used to work at the cinema some years ago. Normally I don't meet anyone of my former workmates anymore, but tonight I was lucky and a former colleague sold me my ticket. A red A4 picture of AR and Rachel Hurd-Wood caught my eye, and I asked him about it. It turned out to be the back cover of the brochure about Perfume that is meant for pupils. My former colleague offered me one, and of course I didn't say no.

The following is my review on the film Perfume, which I saw last night.
( It's really long and contains many spoilers. )

What gave me a thrill during the first half of the film is that one could actually recognise a street or house in Barcelona, which stood in for Paris. I love to see places I’ve been to in films.
The photo is taken from today's edition of the magazine Bunte. It shows Ben Whishaw and Alan Rickman at the premiere in Munich.

| That's what you call a premiere? |
[Sep. 10th, 2006|10:28 pm] |
I've just come back from the Perfume premiere in Cologne, and Alan Rickman didn't attend it. While I had hoped that he might be there, of course, I knew that the chances were slim - despite the fact that he actually was in Munich and Berlin.
Therefore, it was slightly disappointing not to see him in Cologne. But it was even more disappointing that in the end only Tom Tykwer, Bernd Eichinger and Ben Whishaw turned up. No Rachel Hurd-Wood, and none of the German actors that play in the film and which are well known to the German audience. It was quite a joke to call this a premiere.
I should have known, though. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy premiere last year in London had been a quite sobering experience as well. Therefore, there will be no more premieres for me in the future.
I enjoyed meeting severusalanfan and her friend Christine again, though. :)
All in all I'm happy that I attended another event today with Vanessa Redgrave and some other popular German and German-speaking actors who all actually did turn up. ;) |

| Interview with an Alan Rickman impersonator |
[Sep. 9th, 2006|09:46 pm] |
The following is a translation of an interview with Alan Rickman, which was printed in today’s edition of the newspaper Express, which is sold in the Cologne area. It’s a rag, and while I think that the interview is really funny, it seems quite out of character for AR if you take into account other interviews he gave.

The article also mentions that another film premiere will be held in Cologne tomorrow at 7 p.m. No details on the stars, though. |

| AR as AR |
[Sep. 8th, 2006|12:08 am] |
Just in time for today's world premiere of Perfume in Munich, I received the pressbook I had bought. It's 80 pages long and contains the texts that you can also find at the official website.
On top of that, there are a few photos that are not universally known yet. I scanned the ones with Alan Rickman. The quality isn't perfect, but it's the best my scanner can come up with.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that when Tom Tykwer mentioned how at home AR felt in clothes of the 18th century, he imitated AR's way of sitting and placing his feet. It looked exactly like AR does in the right picture in the top row. |

| Face to face with Tom Tykwer |
[Sep. 3rd, 2006|01:23 am] |
Tonight I attended an event with Perfume director Tom Tykwer, assistant director Larissa Trüby, production designer Uli Hanisch and director of photography Frank Griebe. Also present was actress Jessica Schwarz, who plays one of Grenouille’s victims and read from chapter 14.
( spoilers about the film shooting )
After the actual event, Tom Tykwer, Uli Hanisch, Frank Griebe and Jessica Schwarz signed posters respectively centrefolds of a film magazine. While TT signed my magazine, I asked whether he would attend the premiere on 10 September in Cologne and he said he would.
Apropos premiere… a tiny article in Sunday’s Welt am Sonntag mentions that Alan Rickman will be among the stars who attend the premiere in Munich on 7 September. It will be held at the Mathäser-Filmpalast. So he’s going to be at both premieres in Munich and Berlin apparently. |

At the official website of the oncoming film Perfume (http://www.parfum.film.de/) there's an interview with Alan Rickman. So far they've only put up a German translation, and not knowing when they might put up the English original, I translated it although I realise that it's stupid to translate something back into its original language.
